Released in 2004, Kaluoka’Hina: The Enchanted Reef follows Jake, a young sawfish, and his cautious friend Shorty as they set out to restore the magic of a hidden coral reef after a volcanic eruption disrupts the ancient spell protecting it. It’s an adventure story with marine conservation at its heart — and it’s been popular with planetariums and educators for over twenty years.
Directed, written, and produced by Dr. Peter Popp, Kaluoka’Hina helped establish the animation and storytelling approach that runs through everything Softmachine has made since: high-quality CGI built specifically for the fulldome format, paired with a story that carries a real message without feeling like homework.
Why it matters for you: Longevity is the point here. This isn’t a film we made and moved on from — it’s still actively licensed and screened today, which says a lot about what “built to last” actually looks like in fulldome content.
